The talented Hoagy Carmichael gained fame in his lifetime for his singing, acting and to a lesser extent his skills at the piano, but his most important contributions to music were made as a composer. This handsome three-LP box set (which includes a classy 64-page booklet) has recordings of Carmichael's songs from a 60-year period and a wide variety of performers. Programmed more or less in chronological order, the box includes no less than six versions of "Stardust" along with fairly definitive versions of his bigger hits along with some obscurities. The music is not strictly jazz although one gets Bix, Louis Armstrong, the Boswell Sisters, Mildred Bailey, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Billie Holiday, Ella, Mel Torme, Art Pepper and even Wynton Marsalis. In addition, there are selections featuring Bob Hope, Kate Smith, Frank Sinatra, Betty Hutton, Bing Crosby, Jane Wyman, Ray Charles (guess which song) and Margaret Whiting along with ten apperances by Carmichael himself. There are many more than its share of classics in this admirable package which is highly recommended to all. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
