    All Music Guide Review

The music of Hoagy Carmichael is celebrated on this 20-song collection of otherwise unrelated recordings from the 1932-1968 period. The earliest performance is Mildred Bailey's "Rockin' Chair," while the only post-1960 selection is the Living Voices' version of "The Nearness of You." Jazz is de-emphasized in favor of mostly fairly straight vocal renditions from the likes of Helen Ward, Kate Smith, Julie Andrews, Phil Harris, Della Reese, Vaughn Monroe, Kay Starr, and Louis Prima, among others. Carmichael is heard on a 1960 solo rendition of "Stardust" and in 1934 on "Moon Country." There are not a lot of classic versions to be heard here, although Frankie Carle's 1951 rendition of "In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening" is quite fun. Overall, a so-so reissue that is somewhat randomly programmed. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
