All Music Guide Review

The swing era was quickly being supplanted by bop in 1946, but many of the top swing stylists were still recording and playing at their creative peak. Frenchman Charles Delauney visited the U.S. and recorded these three unrelated sessions for his Swing label. Altoist Benny Carter leads a sextet with trumpeter Buck Clayton and tenor saxophonist Ben Webster; Gene Sedric (on tenor and clarinet) jams with some Fats Waller alumni and trumpeter Lincoln Mills; and Jonah Jones is heard with a fine group of Cab Calloway sidemen, including tenorman Ike Quebec. There are many excellent examples of heated swing on this enjoyable and rather historic LP, showing that -- contrary to what is written in the more simplistic jazz history books -- the best swing players had not run out of gas by the mid-'40s. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
