Chemical People

The melodic indie pop of Chemical People's 1992 self-titled release bares more of a resemblance to grunge and '80s pop/rock than the punk artists who originally influenced this band. Chemical People is pure pop/rock without any punk design reference -- except for sloppy musicianship and homespun production. With this record's apparent commercial ambition contrasted by its own shoddy execution, the disc sounds more like a demo collection than a finished product. Singer/drummer/guitarist Dave Naz had the technique to handle the group's earlier, less melodic songwriting approach, but on Chemical People, his monotone warbling sounds droll and unconvincing. Despite this technical deficiencies, Chemical People is still an OK listen. The material is some of the L.A. outfit's best, and their instrumental performances are sturdy.
