Although drummer Cozy Cole is listed as leader (which makes this LP the last recording session that he headed), in reality it is a co-op set supervised by vibraphonist Lionel Hampton. Five alumni from Louis Armstrong's All-Stars (Cole and bassist Arvell Shaw from the late '40s and pianist Marty Napoleon, clarinetist Joe Muranyi and trombonist Big Chief Russell Moore from the 1960s) team up with Hamp and trumpeter Johnny Letman to pay tribute to Satch. Two of the songs ("Louis' Dream" and "Short Ribs") have nothing to do with Armstrong but the band forms a cohesive group sound on those tunes plus six standbys from the All-Star days (including "Someday You'll Be Sorry," "Mack the Knife" and "Indiana"). Nothing all that remarkable occurs but this LP gives the fine trumpeter Johnny Letman a rare opportunity to stretch out. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
