    All Music Guide Review

The second in a two-volume set released in 1989 and 1990, Def Jam Classics, Vol. 2 is an excellent if not definitive look at the history of one of rap music's most crucial labels. Most of the tracks are classics and will be familiar to those who grew up in this era -- there's Public Enemy's "Welcome to the Terrordome," 3rd Bass' "Steppin' to the A.M.," Slick Rick's "Children's Story," Nikki D's "Lettin' Off Steam," and LL Cool J's "Jingling Baby [Remix]." The rarities and otherwise less-popular tracks are provided with a new context. Younger fans whose first memories of rap music date back to the mid-'90s and later should snap this up -- and the preceding volume as well -- with no hesitation. ~ Andy Kellman, All Music Guide
