Lorraine Ellison's powerful pipes garnered the Philadelphian plenty of studio time; everybody had a song for the forceful singer with deep gospel roots. Not Aretha, but not half bad either. She gave songs the treatment they deserve, and seemed bound and determined to blow the snot out of every one put in front of her to record. Just give her the lyrics, cue the track, and stand back and yell "Cut!" at the appropriate times. This early compilation features her hit "Stay With Me"; one that should have been, "Heart Be Still"; and soulful versions of the Miracles' "You Really Got a Hold on Me" and the oft-recorded (but seldom like this) "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother." Meatier compilation in CD format has made this one as obsolete as rotary phones, but it's still a good collectors item. ~ Andrew Hamilton, All Music Guide
