So You're Not Coming Over? is another record from Los Angeles' Poop Alley-centered rock scene (the same cadre of musicians that produced That Dog and the Rentals) -- much of the songwriting on the record is handled by Tom Grimley, a man who gets around in these circles, and musicians like That Dog's Petra Haden pop up from track to track to chime in on backing vocals or additional instruments. The center, however, is singer Benett Rogers, whose girl-group affections sometimes manifest themselves in 60s-style pop gems like "Who's Your Baby?" (a good comparison would be the work of April March, who actually provides backing vocals for the track.) Much of the record, however, layers itself with stews of analog synth sounds, from moogs to tinny beats, and lends an inorganic spaciness to the pop dedication of Benett's and Grimley's songwriting -- as the album drops back and forth from its chirpy pop to its bleepy modernity, things get more and more interesting, with the wealth of pop talent surrounding the Poop Alley studio keeping things fresh and appealing throughout. ~ Nitsuh Abebe, Rovi
