The soundtrack to Scottish director Gillies MacKinnon's Hideous Kinky (1998) successfully sets the time and the place for this unconventional road movie about an English mother's search for enlightenment in Morocco in 1972, two young daughters in tow. Based on Esther Freud's semi-autobiographical novel of the same name (which was actually set in the 1960s) and starring Kate Winslet (in post-Titanic mode), it combines British and American folk, rock, and psychedelia of the late '60s and early '70s (Canned Heat, Nick Drake, the Incredible String Band) with traditional Turkish and Northern African sounds of the 1990s (Jil Jilala, Khalifa Ould Eide & Dimi Mint Abba, Kudsi Erguner). As effective as this unusual combination may be, it's still surprising that Crosby, Stills & Nash ("Marrakesh Express") or George Harrison ("My Sweet Lord," "What is Life) were not included. They seem like the most obvious choices given the film's subject matter (perhaps even too obvious?). Harrison is instead represented by the Beatles' composition "Here Comes the Sun," as interpreted by Richie Havens, who also contributes "Follow." Jefferson Airplane appear twice, as well, with "White Rabbit" and "Somebody to Love," both from Surrealistic Pillow. The only notable omission from the film: America's "A Horse With No Name," but it's arguable whether it would have fit in. ~ Kathleen C. Fennessy, All Music Guide
