With Call Tyrone, his third set for Malaco, Tyrone Davis returns to the highly polished, studio-crafted sound of his second album for the label, Pleasing You. Undoubtedly, this will irk some longtime fans, who rightly believe that Davis sounds his best in more organic settings, but Call Tyrone improves on its predecessor by offering a stronger set of songs and a uniformly impressive set of performances from the man himself. He still sounds restrained in this largely synthesized setting -- there's very little grit here, only immaculate gloss -- but that's the way contemporary soul is. And if you've grown accustomed to that sound, chances are there will be a number of songs and performances here that will delight you. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
