    All Music Guide Review

A propulsive mixture of country-boogie and R&B leaning blues, rockabilly as a distinct form took off in the mid-'50s, burning itself out of its first configuration before the decade was over, morphing into the more diverse (and therefore more diversely marketable) beginnings of rock & roll, which in turned leached out the roll and became the even more viable economic and cultural phenomenon known as rock. One thinks of Memphis' Sun Records and the American south when one thinks of rockabilly, but as a first volley in a soon to explode youth market, rockabilly was actually a global occurrence, as this fine 30-track set from Germany's Bear Family Records shows clearly, Canadian musicians had no trouble at all jumping into the rockabilly fire. Originally released by regional Canadian labels who found it more economical to go homegrown than to lease sides from the U.S., these northern rockers stomped just as wildly and vibrantly as their southern counterpoints, only with a whole lot less press and fanfare. Recorded between 1956 and 1962 (rockabilly hung on a bit longer north of the border), this set is sure to delight fans of the genre. Highlights include Wes Dakus' chugging "El Ringo" instrumental (which sounds as much proto-surf as it does rockabilly), the Stolz Brothers' vibrant and wry (and maybe prescient) "Rock and Roll Riot," the piano driven boogie of "Walking Home" by the Tree Tops and R. Dean Taylor's "At the High School Dance," where Taylor sounds a bit like an early version of Johnny Cash working in front of an Excello Records rhythm section. Fun stuff. ~ Steve Leggett, All Music Guide
