To mark the George Gershwin centenary, Nonesuch Records compiled this selection of songs that originally appeared on the five studio cast albums -- Girl Crazy, Strike Up the Band, Lady, Be Good!, Pardon My English, and Oh, Kay! -- that the company issued between 1990 and 1995 in connection with Roxbury Recordings, the Gershwin family label. In keeping with its title, the album includes both well-known songs such as "Someone to Watch Over Me," "Fascinating Rhythm," and "I've Got a Crush on You" and obscurities such as "When Our Ship Comes Sailing In" (which was cut from Oh, Kay!) and "Meadow Serenade" (originally used in Strike Up the Band and revised for the film The Shocking Miss Pilgrim). Three new recordings have been made for the compilation: "I Don't Think I'll Fall in Love Today" (from Treasure Girl), sung by Dawn Upshaw and David Garrison; "How Long Has This Been Going On?" (from Rosalie), by Audra McDonald; and "Somebody Loves Me" (from George White's Scandals), by Judy Blazer. Upshaw and Blazer also turn up on other songs, along with such performers as John Pizzarelli, Rebecca Luker, and Patrick Cassidy, a good mixture of jazz, theater, and opera singers that appropriately suggest the various musical forms in which George & Ira Gershwin worked. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide
