Part of the Ajax/Joyce label's extensive series of swing and sweet band records put out in the 1970's, this Lp has five complete sessions by the Claude Thornhill Orchestra. The music is mostly quite rewarding but unfortunately the recording quality of the studio recordings is barely so-so. Ajax probably did not have access to the original masters. The 14 selections include four Gil Evans arrangements, most notably "I Get The Blues When It Rains," "La Paloma" and a classic rendition of "Anthropology." In addition there are excellent vocals by Fran Warren on "Early Autumn" and her hit version of "A Sunday Kind Of Love" plus a satirical "Oh, You Beautiful Doll" and Bill Borden's arrangement of "Warsaw Concerto." Most of the better selections on this Lp have since been reissued on CD. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
