Stone Cold World stands as reggae legend Dennis Brown's last work before his death, and this in itself is enough to recommend this disc. Filled with Brown's slightly scratchy, emotional crooning, the 13 tracks showcase flawless examples of the classic reggae sound. As much a part of the foundation of reggae music as Bob Marley and producer Coxsone Dodd, he helped create the laid-back, uplifting style categorized as lovers rock and Stone Cold World shows why even after his death, few can top his widely imitated talent. The title tune serves up a good illustration of what made him so popular. The mid-tempo rhythm is complemented perfectly by Brown's strong, yet mellow vocals advising listeners, "it's a stone cold world/your freedom lies within." "Let's Start Something Serious Tonight" provides a rolling beat and sweet harmonies, and "This Morning" highlights the singer's flowing style. This is a fittingly solid last offering for a highly influential artist. ~ Rosalind Cummings-Yeates, Rovi
