The stylistic sprawl that is the For Real album is nothing if not ambitious. Bob Franke moves from heavy themes and self-consciously poetic pronouncements to straightforward old-time blues, personal revelations, and comedy numbers, and he somehow sounds comfortable with all of it. He uses his strong baritone voice dramatically on the serious numbers, sounding sincere and committed as he belts out uplifting tales of challenge and redemption. On For Real, Franke is backed by an uncredited band that includes percussion, bass, harmonica, and an occasionally overplayed keyboard. The band does work well on some numbers, particularly the mildly salacious "Fuji Blues," but regardless of who else is playing, Franke takes the spotlight back every time he opens his mouth. Several classic songs are here, such as "Beggars to God" and "Boomerang Pancakes," both of which became staples of Bob Franke's live set. ~ Richard Foss, All Music Guide
