Serving as a tribute to the art of witchcraft, Witchcraft: A Gothic Compilation is a collection that spans the different sides of the goth and darkwave genres. As far as traditional goth rock goes, there are a few bands on the compilation that fit the bill perfectly. Shroud is the resident "almost alternative" group, boasting an impressive entry with their catchy and accessible "Spiral Black." Gene Loves Jezebel gets to be the cool old geezers hanging out with young kids with their so-so "Necromancing the Cunning Linquist." Spiral Trance and Trance to the Sun contribute some really great creepy, slow-paced songs, while Kommunity F.K. probably has the most stereotypically goth song among the bunch (which does not make it a bad song by any means). Really, the only weak tracks here are Wreckage's laughably over-enunciated "Black Moon Rising" and a few keyboard-laced tracks that carry the stench of bad synth pop more than anything else. But, overall, this is a good collection of goth music that features a few really good bands and great cover art. ~ Bradley Torreano, All Music Guide
