Following poor album deliveries from the likes of Photek and Source Direct, it was left to the likes of new producers such as Icarus to reclaim the minimal path. Although originally recording techno, cousins Ollie Bown and Sam Britton became increasingly involved in drum'n'bass, signing to Hydrogen Dukebox subsidiary Recordings of Substance in 1997. Fijaka, their second LP, expands on their critically acclaimed (though criminally ignored) debut, Kamikaze, with grating sounds and spacious drops falling against each other as complex layers of filtered and effects-laden percussion patterns flip pacific rim strikes. The curious title came about through the duo's part in a music project based in Bosnia ("Fijak" literally meaning waste of time), with half of the album actually recorded in Mostar. Cutting-edge music recorded in the original spirit of drum'n'bass. ~ Kingsley Marshall, All Music Guide
