All Music Guide Review
Rhino's Soul Train: The Dance Years 1977 provides a good collection of 14 hits from a year when disco ruled the dance and R&B charts. Although some of the featured songs may stretch the definition of dance a little -- terrific it may be, but the Floaters' "Float On" isn't really dance or disco -- it's nevertheless a first-rate collection that boasts a good mix of the familiar ("Best of My Love," "Brick House," "Got to Give It Up, Pt. 1," "Strawberry Letter 23," "Don't Leave Me This Way," "I'm Your Boogie Man," "Boogie Nights") and cuts that aren't always played on the radio, twenty years after the fact ("Serpentine Fire," "It's Ecstasy When You Lay Down Next to Me," "Slide," "Back in Love Again (Every Time I Turn Around," "Do You Wanna Get Funky With Me," "High School Dance"). It's an excellent portrait of a fine year in dance music. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
