    All Music Guide Review

There aren't that many soundtracks that are really enjoyable, even if you haven't seen the film, but the soundtrack to Gas Food Lodging is one of the rare exceptions. The first eight tracks are atmospheric compositions by J. Mascis, an artist more noted for sloppy grunge rock than delicate mood music. Given that background, these pieces are a revelation -- the guy actually knows his way around a melody, and delivers unaccustomed levels of subtlety and grace. Mascis surfaces again at various points in the soundtrack, both alone and with the Velvet Monkeys and other bands. Other artists on the soundtrack include Barry Adamson and Crime and the City Solution, which turn in accomplished and introspective instrumentals, and Victoria Williams, who tosses in a typically idiosyncratic song delivered in her unique and fragile style. Though not intensely involving, the whole thing holds together very well and is a pleasant hour of music. ~ Richard Foss, All Music Guide
