    All Music Guide Review

With the release of Nineteen, the Old 97's stray from their country-rock roots to produce an infectious power-pop gem. Featuring jangling guitars, Rhett Miller's heartfelt vocals, and bassist Murry Hammond's harmonizing, this move seems like a natural transition rather than a calculated attempt at gaining radio airplay. Hardcore fans who are worried that the band might be abandoning their trademark ragged country sound need only listen to the B-side for reassurance. Recorded for Fight Songs but not included on the album, "The Villain" showcases Miller's mastery of clever wordplay and the band's knack for injecting rock with country flavor to produce a truly unique identity. ~ Michael Frey, All Music Guide
