As the cover states in large type, Original Sounds' 1997 release Golden Oldies, Vol. 5 contains the original hits by the original artists. The 11 songs are up-tempo dance songs from the late '50s and (mostly) early '60s with floor-fillers like Dee Dee Sharp's "Mashed Potato Time," Bob & Earl's "Harlem Shuffle," the Larks' "The Jerk," and Cannibal & the Headhunters' manic "Land of a Thousand Dances" leading the way. It is too bad the label didn't add more tunes to keep the party going longer, since it cuts out after about half an hour, barely enough time to work up a sweat. As far as budget collections go though, this is a real gem. ~ Tim Sendra, All Music Guide
