Storyville recorded a session from John Henry Barbee during the blues revival of the early '60s, which was released as Blues Masters, Vol. 3: I Ain't Gonna Pick No More Cotton. The country bluesman hauled out several of his old songs, plus a handful of classics, ranging from "John Henry" and "That's Alright Mama" to "Dust My Broom." Barbee's performances are direct and unadorned, similar in style to his late-'20s/early-'30s recordings but, if anything, they're a little bit better. His playing may not be quite as raw, but his voice has grown deeper and more powerful with age, giving the music an unexpected resonance. Barbee wasn't much more than a minor country-blues player, but his music was quite enjoyable, and this 16-track collection is the best way to hear his modest talents. ~ Thom Owens, All Music Guide
