Daniel Ibbotson

Frequency and Phase is Daniel Ibbotson's third album in just over two years, and from the first few tracks, it shows. The early '80s R&B raunch of the opener, "Coming to Get You," goes on a bit too long, and the follow-up "Island Song" never gets going at all. Still, he ups the ante from his last full-length, Stream Lines, matching his house inspiration (the crisp percussion and loose-booty basslines) with synth-horns, bongos, and electric piano that sound more like '80s porn soundtracks than electronic listening music. It's occasionally closer to electronica muzak than futuristic dance, but Frequency and Phase is a good groove throughout. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide
