While John B.'s first album balanced one disc of jazzy drum'n'bass with another featuring his harder tech-step productions, the Catalyst compilation mashes light and dark together. The album is definitely weighted toward the dark side though, with brilliant effects on drum'n'bass stormers like "Gollum" and "Double J" (the latter with chatting from MC Justiyc). Of the lighter tracks, "Progress" and "Imagine" have a bit of soul flavoring, while "Simulated Sax" is only slightly better than the title indicates. If the results of Catalyst are any judge, then John B. should chuck his jazz inclinations and head for the sound of the future. CD copies include a second disc with the tracks from the first in mixed form. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide
