This 23-track, 70-minute disc, assembled from recordings dating from the 50s and the 60s, is by now a historical document tracing the kinds of interpretations offered by the first generation of folksingers to be influenced by Guthrie, some of whom were his contemporaries. For the most part, the singers, who include The Weavers, Odetta, Ramblin' Jack Elliot, Cisco Huston, and Joan Baez, offer covers of Guthrie favorites that are sweeter and more conventional than the originals. Thankfully, they are interspersed with a handful of tunes featuring Guthrie himself. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide
