Once again, Soul Jazz goes digging through the reggae vaults and produces another sterling compilation stuffed full of rarities that never should have been forgotten. The high point of this one might be Tenor Saw's "Ring the Alarm," a chanting bit of hypnotic throb sure to raise the hackles on your neck. The only quibble, and it is a minor one, is the choice of including "Funky Kingston" by Toots & the Maytals. It's a great song to be sure, but one that anybody with a passing interest in reggae has likely heard, and a song whose vibe is clearly at odds with the tracks that surround it. It's certainly no big deal, and doesn't detract from one's enjoyment, but its inclusion amongst a bunch of tracks the casual listener would not have been familiar with is odd. No matter -- if you're looking for a primer on the music of the island, you could do worse than buying every one of the records in this series. ~ Rob Ferrier, All Music Guide
