Blue '70s: Blue Note Got Soul

Lyrics from Blue '70s: Blue Note Got Soul
All Music Guide Review
On the surface, Blue Seventies is packaged as a Blue Note funk compilation, but the selected music is closer to what would become "smooth jazz" in the '80s and '90s. These tracks were recorded by the Blue Note label at a time when it intentionally embraced the synthesizer, R&B, and disco hybrids tailor-made for pop radio exposure. While the majority of this material was recorded between 1975 and 1977, it does contain two excellent soul jazz blowouts from Lonnie Smith and Grant Green, both from 1970, and totally unlike everything else represented here. Most would agree that the '70s would not symbolize the epitome of what is known as the Blue Note sound. ~ Al Campbell, All Music Guide
