While it isn't top-heavy with a cross-section of funk's most immediately familiar singles, Ridin' Low: Funk Jams is a decent supplement to a good introductory collection or two, featuring some less-often-anthologized sides plus big-ticket items from George Clinton ("Atomic Dog") and Lakeside ("Fantastic Voyage"). There's a heavy concentration on the Clinton axis, featuring another of his solo tracks ("Pumpin' It Up"), Parliament's "Big Bang Theory," and "Body Slam" from Bootsy's Rubber Band; the collection also examines the jazz-fusion side of the genre with cuts by Donald Byrd ("Dominoes") and the Blackbyrds ("Rock Creek Park"). There are much better introductory funk compilations available, but for those who want to dig deeper into the genre without tracking down a lot of individual albums, this could be a good choice. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide
