Double Shot: Alt Rock continues K-Tel's double-disc compilation series devoted to music somewhat (but not too far) outside the mainstream. The "alt-rock" in this installment's title refers mostly to guitar-oriented, post-Nirvana alternative rock, by bands who received some measure of radio or MTV exposure (sometimes represented by their best-known songs, sometimes not). Some acts are more aggressive (Mudhoney, Babes in Toyland, Filter, Ministry, L7), some fall more in the post-grunge category (Better Than Ezra, Seven Mary Three, Candlebox, Spacehog), and some are groundbreaking cult artists who scored at least a little crossover success in the alternative mainstream (Afghan Whigs, Screaming Trees, Primal Scream, the Butthole Surfers, Dinosaur Jr.). Double Shot: Alt Rock doesn't really define any specific trend within its chosen genre, but it is an entertaining sampler, and it does have some familiar items that don't show up on compilations all that often. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide
