All Music Guide Review

After they recorded an instrumental program piece that purported to depict (with the help of written narration) the Eskimo lifestyle, it was kind of hard to imagine how the Residents could get much weirder. Then they came out with the 12" Diskomo EP, the A-side of which featured two tracks from Eskimo remixed in disco style. What can one do except bow before the masters of non sequitur? The B-side had its own title (Goosebump) and consisted of four tracks, all of which are completely bizarre rewrites of Mother Goose nursery rhymes. This CD reissue appends a couple of additional new remixes, including the techno-flavored "Twinkle 2000." It's not easy to critique stuff like this: Either you'll find it fascinating and hilarious, or you'll find it just plain bewildering. Relax and go with them, though, and the Residents can take you all kinds of fun places that you never imagined existed. (Some discographies indicate that an early CD reissue of the Residents' 1978 Duck Stab EP included the Goosebump tracks in addition to the standard Buster & Glen addendum. As of 2000, it appears that Goosebump is now only available on the Diskomo 2000 CD.) ~ Rick Anderson, All Music Guide
