The emphasis is more on "blue-eyed" than "soul" on this 14-track compilation -- how else to explain the inclusion of the Standells' garage-rock anthem "Dirty Water," John Cafferty's Springsteen-lite "Tough All Over," and Jeff Healey's blues-rock workout "Angel Eyes"? It's a shame Blue Eyed Soul is so haphazardly compiled, because there are some great songs here -- the Spencer Davis Group's propulsive "Gimme Some Lovin'," the Foundations' faux-Motown classic "Build Me Up Buttercup," and Mitch Ryder's incendiary "Devil With a Blue Dress On/Good Golly, Miss Molly" among them -- but the set's inherent clumsiness, combined with some seriously questionable material, like the Clarence Clemons/Jackson Browne duet "You're a Friend of Mine" and Bruce Willis' "Respect Yourself," make it easy to pass up. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide
