Originating in the legendary Bay Area punk venue 924 Gilman Street, Green Day broke out to mainstream success by selling 20 million copies worldwide of their 1994 debut album, Dookie. Along with other California bands, like Rancid, The Offspring and Sublime they re- popularized punk rock music of the previous 15 years, by using it as an influence to create a sound and statement all their own.
