Some viewers have compared this film to American cinematic treatments of the plights of returning Vietnam War veterans, but this seems to miss a crucial element at the heart of Ap to Hioni. In addition to the usual reasons for rejection, there seems to be an almost pervasive ethnic resentment toward the trio, as if they somehow are no longer Greek due to their time in Albania.
