Maids was adapted from Renata Melo's hit play of the same name about the real-life experiences of domestic workers in Brazil. Melo, who also co-wrote the screenplay, spent over two years interviewing a couple hundred maids; many of the film's stories and situations, as well as much of its dialogue, were taken directly from the interviews.
