Sometimes, an album becomes more than just a collection of songs. It actually ebbs and flows like a movie, traversing an entire emotional spectrum with just the right combination of notes, tones, and words. CHON's full-length debut album does exactly that. From the lithe opener "Drift" into the engaging and entrancing "Story," the record immediately opens up a swirl of lush guitar, psychedelically pulse-pounding rhythms, and warped bass. "Fall" and "Book" link with a Pink Floyd style elegance as "Can't Wait" delivers a refrain that's just as enthralling as the intricate instrumentation. Each element fortifies into one fluid movement architected by guitarists Mario Camarena and Erick Hansel, bassist Drew Pelisek, and drummer Nathan Camarena.
“Splash” and “Perfect Pillow” expand and augment the journey as the record blasts into infectious intergalactic territory, evolving music along the way. “Echo” remains the stand out with its undeniable chorus and vocalization rolling alongside the guitars and tones. Meanwhile, Matt Garstka of Animals as Leaders makes spirited cameos on “Book” and “But,” fitting right inside the CHON world.
You’ve got to listen to Grow from start to finish. It solidifies CHON as one of music’s most exciting and thrilling acts, while Grow blasts out of the gate as one of the year's best albums.
