The Associated Press reports that a 1986 self-portrait by pop culturist Andy Warhol that was among the last of his paintings to be exhibited while he was alive is going on sale in New York City.
Christie's auction house said Wednesday that it will sell the stark red-on-black "Self-Portrait" on May 11th. It's estimated to fetch a jaw-dropping, whopping, shocking, insanely huge figure of $40 million!
A little history behind this particular work: The painting is considered a landmark work by the American Pop artist created toward the end of his life. It was exhibited for the first time in London in 1986, just six months before his death.
Earlier this year, another Warhol self-portrait sold for more than $17 million at Christie's London auction. The auction record for a Warhol is $71.7 million for "Green Car Crash."
Would you want to hang an Andy Warhol original in your living room? Sure, who wouldn't, but not to the tune of $40 mil!
