David Foster Wallace, an author and creative writing professor best known for his book Infinite Jest, was found dead by his wife, Karen Green, on Friday night. She called the police from their Claremont, CA, home at 9:30 p.m. after discovering Wallace hung himself. He was 46.
Wallace—the Illinois-raised son of two professors—published his first novel, The Broom of the System, in 1987. While Infinite Jest arrived nearly a decade later, Wallace kept busy with a series of short stories and essays in the years between his two major books, including his 1990 look at hip hop culture Signifying Rappers: Rap and Race In the Urban Present. Pomona College welcomed Wallace to their creative writing staff six years ago. He was on leave at the time of his death.
