ARTISTdirect and Rob Decoup [website, twitter] have teamed up to premiere his video for "War Hero." It's intensely poignant and important.
The song lives on Rays of Sun, which is out in January of next year. So this is your super early preview and taste of an artist on the rise.
As a child, Decoup moved to Vienna in the early '80s, where he went to an American school, learned to speak English and fall in love with rock 'n' roll and its power and potential to change the world.
And here is why this song and video are important and why you need to perk up and pay close attention. This is a case of music being redemptive.
"Although the song 'War Hero' was originally written as a general anti-war song, I decided to dedicate the video to Ukraine and their quest to break free from Russian military oppression," Decoup told us.
He furthered, "Communism and the Soviet Union have fallen, but Russian imperialism has not. When I flew to Kiev to shoot the video, I was excited to see firsthand the demonstrations and the fight for freedom and self-determination."
He explained, "After the video shoot, I flew back to New York confident that the Ukrainians would succeed in overthrowing the Yanukovich regime that took its orders from the Kremlin in Moscow. I felt honored to have seen them go to the streets and literally fight the government security forces and after a long struggle they finally took control of their own fate and Putin's puppet president Yanukovich fled Kiev towards Russia. The whole world raised their hands and cherished this victory of democracy and sovereignty. Finally, Urkaine would be free. Right?...Wrong! As I write this now in July 2014, Russian soldiers continue to terrorize eastern Ukraine while a full scale invasion of Ukraine is still imminent."
Powerful, right? Music can be a force for change in the modern and current world.
With all of that in mind, watch the video.
