Fandango, the online ticketing company that services more than 15,000 screens and has a penchant for using paper bag puppets in their advertising spots, has quietly purchased Movies.com, formerly owned by Disney. Movies.com was originally envisioned as a video-on-demand site, but it never developed into the digital powerhouse that Disney had hoped. Instead, it functioned primarily as a newsy entertainment site.
The powers that be at Disney felt that Movies.com was more compatible with Fandango's services and therefore unloaded the web property accordingly. Both sites offer movie screening information, tickets for purchase, and movie trailers as part of their content. Fandango's parent company is cable giant Comcast. Minimal changes have been made to the Movies.com site to start.
