Hilly Krystal, the founder of the legendary New York downtown club CBGBs, died yesterday from complications caused by lung cancer. Krystal, who ran CBGBs for 33 years, was responsible for giving many iconic punk rock bands a place to play and—in many instances—a platform to woo many record label execs.
An impressive roster such as Talking Heads, Blondie, the Ramones, and Television all got their start in the dingy venue, which eventually closed in October 2006.
Blondie frontwoman and one of Kyrstal's longtime friends, Debbie Harry, had this to say about the promoter's passing:
"I am very sorry that Hilly is gone. He was a big help to Blondie and to the New York music scene for many years. His club CBGB's has become a part of New York lore and rock 'n' roll history."
While its contribution to rock and roll is invaluable, CBs relevance waned in its later years. There are plans to open CBGB locations in several locations.
