Iceland's coolest new musical export's "All The Pretty Girls" has all the makings of a hit.
The Icelandic alternative outfit Kaleo emerges with a shimmering, sunny, and soaring single that's perfect for summertime. They're already massive back home with a number one album and gold plaques, but now, recently signed to Atlantic, they're going to breakout big time here in the States this year.
The group's singer JJ spoke to us about "All The Pretty Girls" and more in this exclusive interview.
There's a lot of influences and vibes within what you do. Is that an a propos assessment?
Absolutely, we really mix influences together. We take every song and try to do what's right for each one. We don't say, "We're this kind of band, and we're only going to do this kind of music." We just try embrace each song and do what fits best for that. It has to cross on to some other kind of genre.
Where do songs typically begin?
They begin from me. I usually write the songs. Then, we just explore them together and arrange them. We take them to the studio after that. Sometimes, it's fun to build them in the studio or add things.
What's the story behind "All The Pretty Girls?"
I went to this summer cabin in Iceland a couple of times in the springtime. The vibe of the song is spring or summer. It's a quiet tune. It's the most quiet we've done so far. I guess it's the kind of song you would play at 2am when you're in that sort of a mood in a summer house somewhere. It's relaxed and easygoing. That's everything the song is about. I really like how people connect differently to the lyrics so I don't want to ruin it by telling my story. I love that many of our songs and other artists allow each people to connect in their own ways. I've heard so many different meanings for some of our lyrics. That's the most enjoyable thing about it. People connect personally and have their own meanings.
What artists shaped you?
All of us are influenced by the fifties, sixties, and seventies and music from those eras. I've always loved music from the fifties and those bands. What came out of there has the biggest influence on me. That goes all the way back to the Delta Blues. That's what we've been digging into. There are so many bands and artists. Personally, I love bands like Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Ray Charles, Robert Johnson, and all of these great artists. It's a shame to just name a few because you're influenced by so many different things.
Where did "Broken Bones" come from?
It's just a Delta Blues song. It's very old-fashioned. The rebels of the Slavery Blues are the concept of the song. We played around with it and let it get that vibe, having the recording sound old school and so on.
What influences you outside of music?
I'd personally like to read more. I like movies, but I don't watch a lot of TV because it's hard to find the time. I like traveling and exploring new cultures. It's great to come to the States. It's a new world for us. It's very different. I like meeting new people.
What do you dig the most about the United States?
The weather, I guess [Laughs]. It's pretty damn cold. We don't mind the heat, at least for now. The music scene is so different from Iceland. The market is big, and there's so much to offer. There are so many great studios over here. The roots of all the music we're influenced by, we're in them right now. That's inspiring.
