Russian singer Dima Bilan scored the country's first Eurovision title on Saturday, beating out the Ukraine's Ani Lorak and Greece's Kalomira. Hungarian violinist Edvin Marton and noted Olympic skater Yevgeny Plyushchenko backed up Bilan's performance of the R&B song "Believe," which helped open the festivities in Serbia's Belgrade Arena. That country's Marija Serifovic won last year's Eurovision competition.
While it's been criticized for being far too over the top and kitschy, the Eurovision Song Contest (a.k.a. Eurosong) drew an estimated 15,000 guests to Serbia from throughout the world. The host country's Jelena Tomasevic finished sixth as viewers from 43 countries voted via text messages and phone calls.
