Bounding onto the stage of Hollywood's Avalon on May 2nd, Chris Cornell had the eager look of someone who'd been away from audiences for a long time, even though Audioslave only recently disbanded (setting the stage for the Rage Against the Machine reunion that had been the big buzz of Coachella the weekend before).
Cornell's new solo album, Carry On, is due out on June 5, and, judging by the new songs previewed at the Avalon, will draw more from classic rock than the singer's alt-rock roots. But his set list paid tribute to his time in Audioslave, Soundgarden and Temple of the Dog, including hits "Like a Stone," "Outshined," and "Black Hole Sun," as well as solo soundtrack offerings "You Know My Name" (from Casino Royale) and "Seasons" (from Singles).
