Modern rock's most powerful voice and poignant songwriter, Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell, is urging you to give back in the most wonderful way.
Cornell has made the poetically potent "I Promise It's Not Goodbye" available on his official web site for streaming here in honor of those who lost their lives in the Sandy Hook tragedy. Links are provided for donations in memory of their children.
The song was originally penned as a collaboration between Cornell and a fan named Rory de la Rosa who lost his daughter Ainslee to cancer at only 6-years-old. Rory became diagnosed with the same illness. He reached out to Cornell with a poem he'd written for Ainslee, and the singer had the idea of turning the poem into a song. Tragically, Rory passed away thereafter, but downloads benefited his family in this dark time.
Once again, "I Promise It's Not Goodbye" is doing some serious good. The song itself stands out as one of Cornell's most emotionally charged gems. It builds with a lilting acoustic guitar before slowly ascending into a divine refrain as the words "I swear it's not goodbye" resound seismically. The words come from both the child's and parent's point-of-view, conjuring a cinematic narrative that demands to be heard.
It's a ballad of true unconditional love and a testament to the human spirit—one of Cornell's best.
