Sometimes a solo artist reaches such acclaim their position amongst the musical stars can shadow the band that they emerged from - and audiences can (sometimes) be forgiven for overlooking their previous work. Now, we're not here to state a preference between solo or band-based glories - we're here to simply celebrate a few of the best solo artists who used to front a band, with some of the most memorable moments from their careers. Take a listen to these 20 stars, and tell us who we could add to the list...
Releasing her first solo album, Love. Angel. Music. Baby. the lead singer from No Doubt displayed her songwriting abilities away from the signature sound of Californian alt-rock / ska-punk music. A more accessible sound driving eighteen singles and two studio albums has secured Stefani as an independent voice and pop culture icon in her own right.
Back in 1986 who would have thought the singer from Icelandic band The Sugarcubes could have gone on to be an artist of enduring global significance? With 30 singles reaching the top 40 charts in innumerable countries, a string of critically acclaimed albums, breath-taking live shows, and even an educational app - Björk truly cannot be contained.
The world of music would be an entirely different landscape if not for the collective work of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, aka The Beatles. To omit any of the Fab Four's solo endeavors from this list is a travesty, but to include them all would simply serve to state the obvious. Listen to the lyrics of "Imagine", and let your mind exist in a world without categorical thought, and appreciate the power of refined song-craft, schooled in the most important four-piece that ever existed.
In 1985 Sting's solo debut The Dream Of The Blue Turtles was an impressive departure from his former band The Police. An odd blend of Jazz-infused rock, a statement of roots, exotica and self-determination signaled a path that the solo artist would take through ten more albums, soundtracks and experimental work, each underlining the charismatic approach to getting things done. If The Police were a force to be reckoned with Sting certainly excelled in building his own legacy.
To say that Jackson emerged from The Jackson 5 would be to suggest that he was ever anything but center stage. However, in 1979 Off The Wall established Jackson as a solo artist, beyond the security of his brothers. With an incredible musical talent, and unequalled abilities on the dance floor, Jackson was a visionary video artist with an over-inflated sense of self which he poured into every aspect of his boundless professional catalog. With interstellar sales, eccentric behaviors and a refusal to acknowledge creative restrictions Michael Jackson was a unique and never-to-be-equalled talent.
Following her departure from The Supremes in 1970 the singer released her self-titled solo debut. That album contained the hits "Reach Out And Touch (Somebody's Hand" and "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" Since then, with over 100 million record sales, it seems as if everything Diana Ross touched turned to gold.
Ever controversial in his band The Smiths, Steven Patrick Morrissey has never relented from combating issues close to his heart. As outspoken and honest to himself as he is prolific, since his first solo endeavor in 1987 Morrissey has released ten studio albums, two live albums, eleven compilation albums forty-six singles and one EP. A champion of Veganism and a wonderful bloody-mindedness Morrissey's cultural footprint continues to expand with every release.
When Beyoncé Knowles first released her debut solo album, Dangerously In Love, in 2003 little could we have known what the future would hold for the Destiny's Child starlet. Now a businesswoman, a world-leader in record sales, an innovator of video art, and an outspoken model for 'getting the job done', and one of the most talked-about Superbowl Half time shows of the last 20 years, Beyoncé burns amongst the brightest stars in music history.
