Kanye West told an audience at a screening of his film/extended music video, Runaway, that he thought about killing himself and that he feels a responsibility to contribute to the arts and pop culture, which are two very different things. A friend of mine recently Tweeted that West is this year's Tom Cruise, and I wonder if she is right in her assessment. He is baring his soul, and while some may find it to be TMI, I am finding it endearing. I just hope the rapper doesn't jump the couch, er, shark a la Cruise.
West, never one to be modest, referred to himself as a pop icon and "soldier for culture." But even culture soldiers can go to that dark place of despair, as West admitted that "there were times that I contemplated suicide." He also said that "I will not give up on life again."
"There's so many people that will never get the chance to have their voice heard" as loudly as his, West also lamented. "I do it for them."
The 35-minute film, which features portions of nine new West songs, is set to premiere this weekend on MTV, VH1 and BET.
