It's finally time to close the books on 2010. It's been a year filled with headlines- some about politics (like health care reform and midterm elections) and some about "un-natural" disasters (The BP oil spill and Ke$ha). However, there was still a lot to celebrate this year- and for that, we offer you the top ten songs to blast while you watch the ball drop.
ARTISTdirect.com contributor Mark Phillips counts down the best songs to ring in 2011 including hits by U2, Death Cab for Cutie, The Black Eyed Peas, Kanye West and more!
"New Year's Day"- U2
"All is quiet on New Year's Day," Bono croons on this essential U2 single. I'm guessing it's because everyone's hung-over from the night before! That's all I have to add about this selection. It's called "New Year's Day," so it's pretty obvious why we chose it, people. From War.
"The New Year"- Death Cab for Cutie
Want a depressing, introspective take on 2011? Listen to this indie anthem. "So this is the new year/ and I don't feel any different," claims Death Cab vocalist Ben Gibbard on this, the opening track from their fantastic album, Transatlanticism. That may be so, but this is the year we're going to get in shape and finally move out of our parents' house, we promise!
"I Gotta Feeling"- Black Eyed Peas
Alright, alright. We all know this song is pretty cheesy, and has been played out more than that keyboard cat on youtube. But we say that now; just wait until it's midnight and you've had a couple cocktails. I promise you're going to be shouting "Masel Tov!" along to this one. From The E.N.D. (Energy Never Dies).
"Feeling Good"- Michael Bublé
Michael Bublé does a great take on this standard, which was actually first recorded in 1965 for the musical, The Roar of the Greasepaint, The Smell of the Crowd. Talk about a catchy title for a Broadway play! This song affirms that it's a new day, it's a new life, and you're feelin' good. From It's Time.
"All of the Lights"- Kanye West
This soon-to-be hit single (I'm sure of it) from Kanye's latest and greatest 2010 album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, is as inventive as it is invigorating. As Rihanna implores us to "turn on the lights in here, baby/ extra bright I want y'all to see this," it's a perfect fit to watch the splendor and spectacle that accompanies New Year's.
"What Happened"- Sublime
Now, here's a track for New Year's morning! This hilarious up-tempo cut from Sublime's 40 Oz. to Freedom album recounts a night of overindulgence, in which Brad from Sublime can't remember what he did the night before. It also samples the trumpet riff from the classic 1958 song by The Champs, "Tequila!" Hopefully this won't happen to you on New Year's Eve. *Writer's note: being that the writer grew up near Long Beach, CA, he is legally obliged to include Sublime on this playlist. It's like how people from Jersey have to love Springsteen.
"1999"- Prince
It's seems like it was just 1999- we were all freaking out about Y2K and crying in our rooms about how no one would go with us to prom. Whoops, maybe that was just me. Either way, Prince created what is probably the most ever-present New Year's song around- even if it is technically a bit outdated. From 1999.
"Changes"- David Bowie
This classic rock song is a perfect accompaniment to the notion of starting again. A new year brings along an opportunity to make resolutions and positive adjustments to one's life- even if we'll really only keep it for two or three weeks! From Hunky Dory.
"Tubthumping"- Chumbawamba
Wait, wait- just hear me out! We picked this track because we haven't heard it in over ten years. That makes it automatically worthy of adding to your New Year's Eve playlist. C'mon, you know people will freak out when they hear this song- it will at least remind them of how great the economy was in the nineties. From Tubthumper.
"Start Me Up"- The Rolling Stones
These guys are in a band called The Rolling Stones. Ever heard of them? They wrote a song called "Start Me Up" that contains one of the most famous riffs in music. Ever heard it? We think this
