A few weeks ago, Lady Gaga's third (second? Two-point-fifth?) album hit the masses, and boy did it hit hard. Selling 1.11 million copies of Born This Way its first week solidified Gaga among the annals of pop culture history. In honor of this debut- the biggest of 2011 so far- we decided to count down the best of the Gaga…
Without further adieu, here are the best Lady Gaga tracks:
Ahh, the house that Lady Gaga built. This is the one that keeps the lights on in Lady Gaga's custom spaceship. It's basically her quintessential song, and one of the biggest singles of her career. By that, I mean I don't have to describe it to you since it's pretty much ubiquitous. That cool?
Eliot Spitzer recommended that I include this song. Just kidding! That's a little "political humor" that is neither very political or very… humorous. "Government Hooker" is a thumping, hip track that's great for hip-thumping! Watch for this one to be a potential single off her brand new release- especially with a Top-40 friendly title like "Government Hooker"!
A distorted guitar riff and a screaming Gaga open this track, which turns into a driving, cleverly themed disco pop treat. As Gaga croons "Don't be insecure if your heart is pure" on the chorus, she channels Madonna (imagine that!) and kicks it into high gear. Be a bad kid, baby!
Not only is this one of her biggest singles, it reminds me of Vegas! That reminds me, I need to go to Vegas. (If memory serves, ARTISTdirect.com was the first online site to play this Lady Gaga video, because no one else would – the first! – Ed.)
This was never a single from The Fame Monster, but with its wry lyrics and catchy chorus, it could have been. Throughout the song, Gaga weaves the metaphor that her love interest is a monster. Add it to your Halloween playlist early!
"So Happy I Could Die"
I've never understood the saying, "I'm so happy I could die." I'd much rather die right when everything is going terribly- like if I owed someone a lot of money and they were really mad and just found me. Hypothetically speaking, of course… Now, where were we? Oh, that's right- this is a breezy, beautiful summer buzz that captures the feeling of being so happy you could die… if you understand that sentiment.
This is a song Lady Gaga dedicated to her pool boy. Kidding! It was someone else's pool boy. This hit single acts as an updated rebuttal to Madonna's "La Isla Bonita." I'll tell you what, a Latin flavor and a killer hook will never let you down. Also, a music video with a machine gun bra helps. Do they sell that yet at Victoria's Secret?
"I don't speak German but I can if you like," Gaga austerely proclaims on this multi-lingual club banger-with-sauerkraut. As she launches into a German refrain over a vibrating beat, you feel like you're in an episode of Sprockets. It starts as a female empowerment anthem, then
