Beats Antique got all jazzy with "Let it All Go," and we even got a teaser of the forthcoming Faith No More single "Cone of Shame." And then there was the Daft Punk / The Weeknd team-up on the stellar "Star Boy," and Scarlet Johansson's band Sugar For Sugar covering New Order's "Bizarre Love Triangle."
So much to enjoy, and it was tough to narrow it down to five favorites. But narrow it down we did. Here are some of the week's gems.
Eminem and Skylar Gray - "Kill For You"
Not the first time Slim Shady has worked with Midwest pop singer Skylar Grey, but notable because the results are always worth checking out when the pair link up. This one sees the two of them play loved-up partners in crime. "I'll carry out his evil plans if he wants me to," Grey sings, which is a risky statement when Eminem's involved.
Danny Brown - "Really Doe"
Dragging in friends like Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul and Earl Sweatshirt, "Really Doe" is further proof that there are few better rappers on the circuit right now than Detroit's Danny Brown. Here, we get Brown's distinctive, abrasive vocals on a tune that's intelligent, and kind of chill too.
Green Day - "Still Breathing"
The third track from the Revolution Radio album that's coming soon, "Still Breathing" is a rousing yet slow-paced rocker. "I'm like a junkie tying off the last time, I'm like a loser that's betting on his last dime, Oh, I'm still alive," Billie Joe Armstrong sings, and we all rejoice.
Leonard Cohen - "You Want it Darker"
It seems bizarre that Leonard Cohen turned 82 this week, and yet, at the same time, the man has been around forever. "You Want it Darker" is the title-track from his forthcoming album, which will come out in October. Viewers of the TV show Peaky Blinders have already heard the song, and it is both dark and gorgeous.
Butch Walker - "East Coast Girl"
Uh-oh. The video for "East Coast Girl" sees a dictator taking over the world. It's not the most uplifting sight to behold, even if it is really cool to see in this context. The song, though, is very, VERY upbeat in true Butch Walker fashion. If this gem had been released a few months earlier, it could easily have been the hit of the summer. Like a super-smart Bryan Adams, Walker knows how to sink his hooks into you and belt out a rocker.
