Congrats to Lil Wayne as his Tha Carter IV has sold 964,000 copies in its first week according to Nielsen SoundScan. That was more than enough for the record to land at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. It's Weezy's third No. 1 album, following Tha Carter III and I Am Not a Human Being.
Tha Carter IV has notched the biggest sales week for a hip-hop album and by a male artist since his own Tha Carter III dropped, moving with 1.1 million copies in June 2008. Tha Carter IV is the biggest first week of 2011 after Lady Gaga's Born This Way. Remember, Amazon.com sold Born This Way for .99 cents for two days, which certainly jacked up the sales. Weezy did not employ any such promotion, so it can be argued that his sales were more profitable for his label.
